4 Questions Buyers Should Be Asking Before a Move

As a New York native with plenty of cross-country moves under my belt, I understand the challenges that often come with planning your next move. Whether you’re relocating over state lines or transitioning across town, here are 4 questions for you to ask yourself to help narrow down your home search.

  1. Where do you want to be? Do you unwind by adding milage to your hiking shoes every weekend? Are you an AMC Stubs A-Lister who needs a direct route to the theatre? Is your car constantly beach-ready, stuffed to the brim with boogie boards and beach towels? Falling in love with your new area is just as important as falling in love with your new house. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the natural features around you or hustle through the bustle of highways and skyscrapers, dropping a pin in some geographic areas that appeal to you can help eliminate a lot of cities that won’t fit your needs.

  2. Where do you need to go? Schools, offices, churches, parks, shopping centers … while you won’t find these inside the properties you view, their proximity to your new home-base is absolutely something to consider. When you’re ranking neighborhoods, look at the route you would have to take to bring the kids to school before heading into the office. Do you work remotely? Think about how close your new home is to construction or busy areas that may weaken your signal. If you prioritize downtown date nights, you may want to find an area with easy access into the city. Try drawing circles around your city highlights and focus your search for homes where they intersect.

  3. Where will you be proud to call home? Thinking about design and style may not seem as essential as size and square footage, but factoring those into your dream home checklist will help your new house feel a lot more like home. Are you more excited about a hands-on fixer upper, or a move-in ready turnkey? Are you more drawn to colonial charm or contemporary character? Do you like the feel of a farmhouse or the tone of a tudor? Deciding which homes you’re more attracted to can help point you towards specific neighborhoods.

  4. Where is your price point? Now that you have a more clear picture of where you’re looking to move and what you’re looking to buy, condensing a list of homes within your budget can give you an easy weekend of open houses and community tours. I would love to get you in contact with a lender that can break your budget down and give you a price range to browse through.
